Skylight Foundation Board Spotlight: Dr. Donald Malone

The Skylight Foundation Board is made up of incredible people who have become pillars in our community. These people have all come together with a shared passion for helping those less fortunate in our communities, focusing on families and children in need. Together they have helped the foundation make a difference in many people’s lives. With this in mind, we want to shed light on the people who make up the board, starting with board member Dr. Donald Malone.

Don Malone was born and raised in Euclid, OH, where his love for helping the Cleveland community stemmed. He attended Euclid High and continued his education at Youngstown State University to eventually receive his MD from Northeastern Ohio University’s College of Medicine in 1985. He then moved to Boston, MA, to train in psychiatry before moving back to Ohio in 1989.

Don has been working for the Cleveland Clinic for the 32 years since. During his time at the Cleveland Clinic, he has held various roles, including practicing psychiatry, participating in research, being chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology for 11 years, President of Lutheran Hospital on W. 25th Street, and much more. His current title is President of Ohio Hospitals and Family Health Centers, which means he oversees Cleveland Clinic main campus, all Ohio regional hospitals, family health centers, and ambulatory sites. Don has become an influential figure with his roles at the Cleveland Clinic and has used them to get involved in bettering the Cleveland community constantly.

Don is married with three grown children. He and his wife raised their children in Highland Heights, but moved to Ohio City within the last couple of years. “We really love living in the city and the urban environment because of the diversity that the city brings,” Don said. Moving to the Ohio City area and working at Lutheran Hospital, which is right down the road from the Skylight’s Cleveland office, led to his involvement with the Skylight Foundation.

“I got to know the folks over at Skylight because they are neighbors with Lutheran Hospital, so we have worked together on various things and have taken advantage of the beautiful space the Skylight office has,” Don said. Through this connection, Don received background on the foundation and what being on the board entailed. He was drawn to the focus on helping those in the surrounding community, especially with families and those with disabilities.

On the flip side, Skylight Managing Partner Mike Connole is on the board of trustees at Lutheran Hospital. “Lutheran Hospital and Skylight have developed a very nice mutual relationship in making a difference in the Ohio City area,” Don said. Lutheran advisory accounts have also introduced Don to many other organizations and nonprofits in Cleveland.

“What I love most about Skylight is their commitment to Ohio City. They could have easily gone to a suburb, but they have added value to this neighborhood by bringing business and people to the area,” Don shared. The foundation continues to grow and make a difference in the community, which can be attributed to the amazing people like Don who make up the board.

Thanks for sharing, Don!
